His flag paintings hang in the Toronto Stock Exchange, the Canadian Embassy in Washington, and Parliament buildings in Ottawa. Suhair Sibai

border.png

Born in Syria in 1956, educated in the USA, and inspired by her global memories, Suhair Sibai creates paintings that beautifully combine modern themes using classical techniques of artists like Klimt and Caravaggio. She was formed as an artist in the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles where she experienced first hand the uniqueness and discord of multiculturalism mingled with the imagined world of Hollywood. Displacement, alienation and modification of the “self” and “identity” are the apogees of Suhair’s work. She depicts identity in relation to personal experiences living in a global world. She is also highly invested in the depiction of the facial expressions that result from a different set of emotions. Viewing her paintings, one can be truly overwhelmed with the depiction of certain emotions using colors that would usually contradict them. This in particular makes her perception of human emotion uniquely different and thought provoking. Suhair’s work has been exhibited in the USA, England, Morocco, France, Qatar, and her native Syria.
