Lotus Bud, summer, 2009

by Jamelie Hassan

"This watercolour is from an on-going series I have been doing of our garden in London, Ontario. The gardens are created by artist Ron Benner and since we bought this property together in 1986 - over the past 3 decades - I have been painting various views - documenting a history of our place together. The water garden is an aspect that I often return to – with its fish and water plants."

Imagine!

by Suhair Sibai

"My paintings are self-portraits that examine moments in times of deep reflection, and that infuse the personal with the universal within a singular, human face. My portraits serve as a medium to bring a mélange of internal contemplation and complexity to the surface. Feelings ranging from exhilaration of pride to distress of anguish to commingle to bring about these works in their current form.  My paintings are narratives of psychological states, and are provoked by the current times of adversity and perplexing sociopolitical changes. The larger-than-life isolated faces with silenced, gazing visages seek to challenge viewers' perceptions and preconceived notions. They communicate stories of dual identities (such as mine), projecting at the same time an aura of detachment and closeness, fragility and strength, and despondency and hopefulness.  Ultimately, these portraits speak of my artistic desire to engage the receiving audience with dialogues of distinctive tenderness, poetry and seduction."
