CAI Launches Breaking Down to Build Up; De-busting Arab Identity Myths and Tackling Racism
Toronto, March 31, 2022 – From the different research projects and community programs that the Canadian Arab Institute (CAI) runs, we know that there is an anti-Arab racism issue in Canada. However, there have been no community programs or projects that focus on understanding what anti-Arab racism is, what it looks like in Canada, and how to combat it. That changes today. Thanks to generous funding from the Department of Heritage Canada, CAI is proud to launch our newest project to help understand and combat anti-Arab racism: Breaking Down to Build Up; De-busting Arab Identity Myths and Tackling Racism. We welcome the Government of Canada’s commitment to tackling anti-Arab racism by supporting and funding the creation of media and knowledge mobilization materials to debunk myths around Arab identity.
As part of this groundbreaking project, CAI is excited to partner with two community organizations - Open Screenplay and Yalla! Let's Talk - to produce some much-needed content that will counter anti-Arab racism in Canada. Our friends at Open Screenplay will be producing a screenplay named Lemons, written beautifully by aspiring Arab-Canadian screenwriter, Rayan Askar. With our friends at Yalla! Let’s Talk, we will be producing a podcast series around Arab identity in Canada. We are grateful for our partnerships and are looking forward to sharing groundbreaking stories that empower Arab-Canadians and give community members an opportunity to raise awareness about the struggles they face when trying to integrate into Canadian society.

Toronto, le 31 mars 2022 - Grâce aux différents projets de recherche et aux programmes communautaires de l'Institut Canadien Arabe (ICA), nous savons qu'il existe un problème de racisme anti-arabe au Canada. Cependant, il n'y a pas eu de programmes ou de projets communautaires visant à comprendre ce qu'est le racisme anti-arabe, à quoi il ressemble au Canada et comment le combattre. Cela change aujourd'hui. Grâce au généreux financement du ministère du Patrimoine canadien, l'IPE est fière de lancer son tout nouveau projet pour aider à comprendre et à combattre le racisme anti-arabe : Breaking Down to Build Up ; De-busting Arab Identity Myths and Tackling Racism. Nous saluons l'engagement du gouvernement du Canada à s'attaquer au racisme anti-arabe en soutenant et en finançant la création de matériel médiatique et de mobilisation des connaissances pour démystifier les mythes entourant l'identité arabe.
Dans le cadre de ce projet novateur, l'IPE est heureux de s'associer à deux organisations communautaires - Open Screenplay et Yalla ! Let's Talk - afin de produire un contenu indispensable pour contrer le racisme anti-arabe au Canada. Nos amis d'Open Screenplay produiront un scénario intitulé Lemons, magnifiquement écrit par le scénariste arabo-canadien en herbe, Rayan Askar. Avec nos amis de Yalla ! Let's Talk, nous allons produire une série de podcasts sur l'identité arabe au Canada. Nous sommes reconnaissants pour nos partenariats et nous sommes impatients de partager des histoires révolutionnaires qui renforcent l'autonomie des Arabo-Canadiens, et donnent aux membres de la communauté l'occasion de sensibiliser les gens aux difficultés qu'ils rencontrent lorsqu'ils essaient de s'intégrer dans la société canadienne.
