Employment Barriers Facing Arab Women in Canada

In collaboration with the Newcomer Students’ Association and supported by Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE), the Canadian Arab Institute (CAI) launched a community-based research project on the employment barriers facing Arab women in Ontario, Québec, and Alberta.

The study had three key objectives:

  1. Understand the knowledge gaps behind the ever-increasing employment barriers facing Arab women and filling these gaps with evidence that inform policy recommendations;

  2. Conduct a community-based research project with a focus on race-based data collection that ensures intersectionality (refugee Arab women, Muslim Arab women, Black Arab women, Queer Arab women, etc.) to ensure the data is reliable and generalizable; and

  3. Contribute to a larger discussion on employment with emphasis on improving integration outcomes and policies for newcomers in Canada.

En collaboration avec l'Association des étudiants nouveaux arrivants et avec le soutien de Femmes et Égalité des genres Canada (WAGE), l'Institut canado-arabe (CAI) a lancé un projet de recherche communautaire sur les obstacles à l'emploi auxquels sont confrontées les femmes arabes en Ontario, au Québec et en Alberta.

L'étude avait trois objectifs principaux :

  1. Comprendre les lacunes dans les connaissances derrière les obstacles à l'emploi sans cesse croissants auxquels sont confrontées les femmes arabes et combler ces lacunes avec des preuves qui éclairent les recommandations politiques ;

  2. Mener un projet de recherche communautaire axé sur la collecte de données fondées sur la race qui assure l'intersectionnalité (femmes arabes réfugiées, femmes arabes musulmanes, femmes arabes noires, femmes arabes queer, etc.) pour garantir que les données sont fiables et généralisables ; et

  3. Contribuer à une discussion plus large sur l'emploi en mettant l'accent sur l'amélioration des résultats et des politiques d'intégration pour les nouveaux arrivants au Canada.

Report Launch

On April 28, 2022 we hosted a webinar, launching our report, highlighting the findings, and discussing them! The event was hosted on Zoom and featured on Twitter spaces!

We were honoured to have our keynote speaker, MP Lena Metlege Diab followed by a presentation of the results by co-lead investigators, Rania Younes and Emna Braham. Following the presentation, Jad El Tal, Director of Research and Policy at CAI, Czara Awad, research assistant at CAI, and Paulina Awwadeh, research assistant at CAI, discussed the findings.
